2016 Manikato Stakes to Figure for The Quarterback

Robbie Griffiths has revealed he will set Group 1 winner The Quarterback for a three start preparation in spring, including a stop in the 2016 Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley in October.

The Quarterback has been a strong and consistent performer for Griffiths through his entire racing career so far but undoubtedly reached a new level upon resuming in 2016; highlighted by an impressive and maiden win at the highest level in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) on March 12th.

Griffiths told AAP that the Street Boss gelding relishes the conditions at Flemington and will run two of his three races on the large track, but will head to Moonee Valley to take his place in the 2016 Manikato Stakes second-up.

“He loves Flemington so we’re going to keep him at Flemington for two of his three runs,” Griffiths said.

“I think his three runs in a row were outstanding.

“I know Chautauqua wasn’t in it (William Reid Stakes) but what he did at weight-for-age, to miss the kick and come around the field that night was unbelievable.

“I think if he can emulate those performances again in the spring and the autumn, he’s going to run well in whatever he runs in.”

Griffiths initially considered setting The Quarterback for a trip to Royal Ascot following the Autumn Carnival, but believes he has made the right decision in keeping the gelding at home with a view towards spring.

“He normally has about four runs in his prep and then he starts to taper off,” he said.

“We were hoping as he got older and matured that he could extend his preparation, but the alarm bells went off a little bit when he ran third in the VOBIS Gold Sprint at his fifth run.

“But his sectionals were good so we pushed forward and he just lost that bit of zing in The Goodwood.

“So it’s obvious he’s about a four-run horse so if we were going to do that next year, we’d have to look at that and work backwards.”

The Quarterback has posted eight wins and eight minors through twenty-seven competitive starts, since first appearing on course in 2013.
