2016 Manikato Stakes to Figure for Holler

June 22nd, 2016

Trainer John O’Shea has underlined the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) as the likely major target for Holler, when the colt returns to Australia during the 2016 Spring Carnival.

Holler has been a strong and consistent performer for the Godolphin outfit through his entire racing career so far, and is currently in England following a hapless performance for seventh in the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes (1207m) during last week’s Royal Ascot Carnival.

Having initially hinted an appearance in the Group 1 July Cup (1207m) in England may figure as the next point of call for the three-year-old, O’Shea told AAP that Holler will instead return to Australia with a view towards races like the 2016 Manikato Stakes in spring.

“He’s come out of the race well, but he’ll have a break now, and we will get him ready for the big races in the spring at home,” O’Shea said.

“The race that springs to mind is the Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley (on Oct 21). He loves the Valley, and has run some big races there.

“But having said that, I believe he has benefited from his race up the straight at Ascot. He will have learned a lot.”

Claiming four wins and five minors through only twelve competitive starts so far, Holler immediately stamped himself as one to watch when debuting for a comfortable win in the Hyland Race Colours Plate (1100m) at Randwick in January 2015.

Failing to beat a single runner home in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) in early spring, the Commands colt responded with second place finishes in each of the More Than Ready @ Vinery BM80 (1200m) and Listed Gothic Stakes (1400m) before ending his year with a classy win in the Group 3 Red Anchor Stakes (1200m).

Beating an open field to the line in the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) at the Valley first-up this year, Holler failed to handle the late pace when fifth in the Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m) before responded with a career-best performance to date to win the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) on March 5th.

Ending his autumn campaign an agonizingly-close second in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) on March 24th, Holler has amassed more than $700,000 in prize money through his short career so far.
