Champion sprinter Chautauqua was unable to make up the distance when fourth in the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) first-up, and is faced with a tough task in overcome barrier 1 in the 2016 Manikato Stakes.

A multiple Group 1 winner, Chautauqua returned to racing this year for a classy win in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) before a luckless run for third in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m).

Returning to winning form with a successful defence of his crown in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m), the Encosta De Lago gelding was set on his first overseas mission and justified the decision with a strong win in the Group 1 Chairman’s Sprint Prize (1200m) in Hong Kong.

Veteran sprinter Buffering has drawn into the 2016 Manikato Stakes field in barrier 2, and should find a good position in transit from the inside barrier.

Buffering broke through for his maiden win at the highest level in the 2013 edition of the Manikato Stakes and has subsequently posted six further Group 1 triumphs.

Returning to the paddock after winning the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) and Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) most notably in 2015, the Mossman gelding resumed in January for success in the Magic Millions Plate (1300m) before a trip abroad delivered a win in the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint (1200m) in the Middle East.

Having placed fifth in the Moir Stakes first-up this time, Buffering will undoubtedly need to have taken plenty of improvement from the run if he is to win the Manikato Stakes.

Only one horse, Fell Swoop, is yet to salute at the highest level of racing, but the talented sprinter is drawn well for a good run in the 2016 Manikato Stakes in barrier 3.

The stable star for Canberra-based Matt Dale, Fell Swoop was rated an outsider in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) first-up this year, but produced a massive turn of foot to finish an agonizingly-close second.

Progressing to fourth in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m), the Not A Single Doubt gelding charged home to finish a close second in the TJ Smith Stakes before returning to winning form in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m).

While unable to fire in two subsequent Brisbane starts, Fell Swoop resuming this time for third in the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1100m) and is primed for a big run in the Manikato Stakes.

The Quarterback appears to have returned to racing in smart form this time but will undoubtedly require luck in transit on Friday night after drawing into the Manikato Stakes field in the outside barrier.

A shock winner of the Newmarket Handicap in autumn, The Quarterback delivered a smart field a comfortable defeat in the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) first-up on October 2nd.
